Oliver credits Bryant for Hall induction

BIRMINGHAM | With five national championships as either a player or coach at the University of Alabama, Bill Oliver's place in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame will be secured this weekend with his induction in the ASHOF's class of 2013.

The former UA player and assistant coach credited legendary coach Paul W. "Bear" Bryant first and foremost when asked about his place in the hall Friday.

"I've got a pile of them. But the thing I appreciate more than anything is what I learned under Coach Bryant to begin with," Oliver said. "As a player, as a coach, the things he taught me about the recruiting part of it, abilities, how to play smart, and teach players to play smart. Those are things that go unnoticed a lot of times."

HURT: Jones family influenced by two Hall of Fame coaches

On Saturday night, Rex Jones would be sitting at an intersection.

He wouldn't be in a car waiting on a traffic light or standing on a street corner. Impeccably dressed, surrounded by family, Jones would attend the induction banquet for the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. The intersection would be one not of travel, but of history. If it were a journey of sorts, Jones may be the only person for whom the lines had connected in just this way.

Jones, a former University of Alabama basketball player, wasn't being honored for his own athletic accomplishments. Instead, he represented his father, the late Bill Jones, the man who essentially personified the University of North Alabama basketball program for 40 years and coached the Lions to an NCAA Division II championship in 1979.

Saban 'disappointed' by Davis' comments

ATLANTA | University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban said Thursday that comments by Florida assistant coach Tim Davis comparing Saban to "the devil himself" were "terribly disappointing."

"It really is a little ... terribly disappointing," Saban said.

Davis made the comments at a Florida booster club meeting last week. The current offensive line coach at Florida, Davis worked for Saban both at Miami and, in an off-the-field capacity, at Alabama in 2007. Davis also commented that current Florida head coach Will Muschamp was "like the other guy (Saban), only he's got a personality. He'll smile at you. He'll talk to you."
